2 dead in South End shooting stemming from domestic dispute, CMPD says

CHARLOTTE — Two people died in a shooting that stemmed from a domestic situation in a popular area of South End, according to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.

It happened outside Wooden Robot Brewery and Vinyl, a bar on South Tryon Street, just before midnight Monday.

CMPD said in a news release they responded to an assault with a deadly weapon call near West Summit Avenue.

Dionyah Truelove Thompson, 23, was found shot and killed in a car, according to police. Elie Hugo Noel, 33, was also found with a gunshot wound. Investigators said he was taken to the hospital, where he later died. A third person was listed on the police report for the incident, but he did not have serious injuries.

Police said an investigation determined that Noel fatally shot Thompson and then took his own life.

CMPD cleared the scene a little after 4 a.m. Tuesday.

Channel 9′s Hunter Sáenz learned the incident revolved around a domestic dispute. Thompson’s family said she was a West Charlotte High School graduate who loved shopping and could cook like a chef. Her family and the community were left puzzled by what happened.

“It just goes to show that anything can happen at any moment,” said Tyler Hall.

Hall is a tattoo artist at Tattoo Me Charlotte, a nearby business.

“I’m a Charlotte native, and you definitely don’t hear about stuff like this too much in this neighborhood,” Hall said.

Hunter Oxford agrees. He frequents the nearby bars and breweries and lives in the area.

“It definitely changes how we feel about the area,” Oxford said. “It’s not something that typically happens in this specific area of town as often.”

Sáenz crime-mapped the area on Tuesday, searching within a half-mile radius of where the shooting happened. He found it was the only violent crime that’s happened there since the beginning of the year.
