Charred remains of building remind residents of deadly SouthPark fire

CHARLOTTE — A little over two weeks have passed since a deadly fire at an apartment under construction in SouthPark and the memory of the devastation is still fresh for people who live and work in the area.

“In my field of vision, all I could see was fire,” said Julia Zaremski, who lives across from the scene. “I could feel this intense heat. I’ve never felt anything like that before.”

Zaremski while the building was under construction, she became familiar with the workers who bonded with her dog Molly.

“I take her for a walk every morning and all the construction workers are really, really nice to her and they would say, ‘Hello Molly,’” Zaremski said.

Channel 9′s Jonathan Lowe went to the site Friday night and saw six vehicles, melted and totaled, that were still parked in the same spot on the day of the fire.

Family members, friends, and co-workers will gather Saturday to remember Demonte Sherrill, one of the two construction workers who died in the fire.

The service will be at Covenant Presbyterian Church. Visitation is at 1:30 p.m. The funeral service will follow at 2 p.m.
