Hidden Valley park awarded grant to give neighborhood park a makeover

CHARLOTTE — The only developed park in northeast Charlotte’s Hidden Valley neighborhood is in need of repair.

Many of the trails at Tom Hunter Park that lead into neighborhoods are blocked by fallen trees and debris.

But new grant money could fix that problem. Rebuilding Together of Greater Charlotte said it asked residents what improvements they’d like to see at the park. They were granted the $125,000 grant from the Republic Services Charitable Foundation National Neighborhood Promise program that they had applied for.

One community member said families come out year-round for the playground, basketball court, and green space.

“Love the community, we love it, but the upgrade is needed,” said Veronica Washington, the Outreach Director for Northside Baptist Church and Christian Academy.

If you live in Hidden Valley, you could get help with critical home repairs. Rebuilding Together of Greater Charlotte says homeowners can now apply for its “Building a Healthy Neighborhood” program. It’s part of a long-term investment with the goal of restoring 40 homes.
