Local businesses impacted by monthslong road closure in NoDa

CHARLOTTE — Several local businesses and drivers are bracing for a lengthy road closure in Charlotte’s NoDa community.

East 27th Street shut down Tuesday for a storm drain project and is not projected to reopen until the middle of October. The street is right off of North Davidson Street and runs over to Yadkin Avenue.

“The question is, where’s everyone going to park when they want to come grab a quick sandwich?” asked Sutton Myes, the beer and wine director at Rhino Market.

And he’s not alone.

>> In the video at the top of the page, one of the owners explains to Channel 9’s Almiya White the issues the closure will cause.

Below is information from Charlotte-Mecklenburg Storm Water Services:

“The North Davidson Storm Drainage Improvement Project will replace aging storm drainage infrastructure at the intersection of North Davidson Street and East 27th Street. This project includes installation of a large 14-foot-wide box culvert, more than 100 feet long, underneath North Davidson Street.

  • “A portion of 27th St. will be closed for the duration of the project. Street parking will be impacted. Access to businesses and residences in the area will be maintained.
  • “A single lane closure will be in place on N. Davidson St. with traffic control flaggers assisting two-way traffic flow.
  • “In a few weeks, the intersection of N. Davidson/27th will close for two months. Electronic message boards will notify drivers a week in advance about the closure and detour.
  • “As construction progresses into mid-2023, the intersection will partially reopen with a single lane closure along N. Davidson St.

“This project improves essential infrastructure for our growing city. We recognize construction is disruptive and appreciate the public’s patience as we make improvements to benefit our community.”
