Nursing assistant says thieves stole money off her tax refund card

BURKE COUNTY, N.C. — A nursing assistant in Burke County says thieves were stealing money from a prepaid debit card she received as a tax refund.

Amber Wyatt says she got a nice tax refund earlier this year. Like a lot of people, she got the refund up front on a prepaid “Serve” debit card.

But Wyatt told Action 9′s Jason Stoogenke that it wasn’t long before she noticed suspicious charges eating away at her balance.

She said roughly $400 was used for Uber Eats, a service she never used.

“It would be like $2. Then $60. $2. $80. It would just add up,” Wyatt said.

Wyatt said she complained but she got the runaround. Then her claim was denied, so she emailed Stoogenke.

Stoogenke emailed the company behind the card, American Express, and got Wyatt a refund.

“You just know that you’re in the right anyway, but of course it’s going to take somebody doing the extra little push,” she said. “You just don’t want any money gone anyway. It doesn’t matter how much money you got. You just don’t want nobody taking your money like that.”

American Express forwarded Action 9′s email to InComm Payments, which manages the Serve card. InComm said:

“InComm Payments takes concerns from cardholders very seriously and continues to invest significantly in solutions to protect our customers. We do not comment on individual cases to respect the privacy of our customers, but we can share that we have been in contact with Amber Wyatt to address their issue. If one of our customers believes they may be a victim of fraud, they should call the customer care number on the back of their card immediately so we can initiate an investigation. For more information on their cards or to check account balances, cardholders should visit their product’s official website, which is printed on the back of their card.”
