CONCORD, N.C. — An innocent driver was killed, and a driver is on the run after a chase ended in a crash in Concord late Monday night, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.
It happened along George Liles Parkway and Interstate 85. Police say the chase broke out around 11 p.m.
A section of George Liles Parkway between Exchange Street and Kannapolis Highway was closed until around 4:45 Tuesday morning.
Troopers say they spotted a speeding driver traveling at 111 mph on the interstate and pulled him over for a traffic stop.
While speaking with the driver, the trooper noticed signs of impairment. Troopers say the driver then fled the traffic stop, prompting a pursuit.
Troopers say the suspect exited onto George Liles Boulevard, ran a red light, and collided with a Cadillac, which caught fire after the impact.
The driver of the Cadillac, identified as 40-year-old Calvin Leon Costner, was pulled from the vehicle but succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
His family told Channel 9, “he was a father, a brother, and an uncle. He will be truly, truly missed.”
“It’s a tragic loss for us all, friends and family,” said Costner’s brother, who was too emotional to speak on camera.
Ana Gomez, who witnessed the aftermath, expressed her fear and concern for her family’s safety.
“I kinda feel scared, I’m a nervous person,” said Ana Gomez, who lives near the crash site.
Gomez mentioned that she now drives her daughter to school instead of letting her ride the bus due to the ongoing manhunt.
An officer involved in the rescue attempt suffered minor burns but there were no other injuries reported.
The suspect fled on foot after the crash and has not yet been located. Authorities are asking anyone with information to contact the State Highway Patrol.
