Man in custody after 12-hour police standoff in northeast Charlotte

CHARLOTTE — A man was taken into custody early Tuesday morning after a 12-hour police standoff in northeast Charlotte, according to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.

The hourslong response started just before 5 p.m. Monday at the Evoke Living at Sugar Creek Apartments on Merlane Drive.

Police say 33-year-old Jerricho Alexander now faces multiple charges, including assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury, attempted murder, five counts of assault with a deadly weapon on a government official and possession of a firearm by a felon.

According to CMPD, officers connected Alexander and his vehicle to a shooting that occurred Saturday outside a gas station on West Sugar Creek Road.

When officers attempted to serve a warrant at the apartment, Alexander barricaded himself inside. Police say he was in the apartment by himself.

Around 12:30 a.m., officers say Alexander fired shots from inside the apartment, but no one was hurt.

A neighbor told Channel 9 that some apartments had to be evacuated.

“It’s a little nerve wrecking, seeing them with giant guns, scopes, helmets on,” said Andrea Wright. “It seems like it’s serious, you keep hearing more and more police cars coming up.”

Ultimately, Alexander was safely taken into custody around 4:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Deputy Chief Jackie Bryley said the length of the response was about preserving safety and getting the suspect out without further incident.

“Preservation of life is always going to be our first priority when it comes to instances like this, so as long as it takes is what we’re going to do,” Bryley said.

Residents of the apartment complex are now cleared to return home.

Police say they are not looking for any additional victims or suspects at this time.
