The Political Beat: Second-generation lawmaker bids for lieutenant governor’s office

CHARLOTTE — North Carolina state Sen. Rachel Hunt is following in her father’s footsteps as she eyes the lieutenant governor’s office.

Hunt, a Democrat currently representing southeast Mecklenburg County, spoke with the Political Beat’s Joe Bruno about her aspirations for higher office and the work she says needs to be done.

“I am running to bring some honor and dignity back to this office after what (Lt. Gov.) Mark Robinson has done to it,” Hunt said. “I intend to make sure people’s voices are heard in Raleigh.”

Despite the position being largely ceremonial, Hunt said divisive behavior by Lt. Gov. Robinson has an impact across the state. If elected, she said she’ll listen to constituents and fight for the people.

While campaigning, she’ll continue to hold her position in the state senate where she said the focus will be on supporting a strong economy, good schools and a healthy environment.

“If we make sure bills are passed on these three things, every North Carolinian’s life will be better,” Hunt said.

Politics aren’t new to the Hunt family. Rachel’s father Jim Hunt was North Carolina’s governor for a total of 16 years. Rachel said he dad is one of her biggest cheerleaders and gives her wisdom everyday.

“The main advice is to work your head off,” she said. “You can’t work too hard, you can’t do too much, you can’t serve too many people to do the right thing.”
