VOTE 2022: Charlotte Mayor Lyles wins re-election; Dems sweep at-large seats

CHARLOTTE — Mayor Vi Lyles and the Democrats who ran for at-large seats swept the municipal election in Charlotte Tuesday night.

The polls closed at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday for a rare summertime Election Day in Charlotte. The election was rescheduled for Tuesday due to a delay in the 2020 U.S. Census results.

Councilwoman Dimple Ajmera finished as the top vote-getter in the city council at-large race, which put her in contention to be mayor pro tem. The council will vote on this when they are sworn in.

Election Day voters propelled incumbent Republican Tariq Bokhari to victory over his Democratic challenger Stephanie Hand in District 7.

Bokhari was ahead by 377 votes or 1.89%, which is outside the threshold for a recount, and there are not enough mail ballots left to be counted.
