The election is usually in the fall and these races were supposed to happen in November 2021. It was delayed until July 26, because of late results from the U.S. Census.

Mayor

Mayor Vi Lyles is seeking her third term. She is facing Republican and newcomer Stephanie de Sarachaga-Bilbao. De Sarachaga-Bilbao is the wife of a Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officer and is running on a public safety platform.

At-Large:

The Democrats running all have experience with the Charlotte City Council: Dimple Ajmera, Braxton Winston, James Mitchell and LaWana Slack-Mayfield. Four Republican newcomers are seeking a seat: Kyle Luebke, Charlie Mulligan, Carrie Olinski and David Merrill. Of the four Republicans running, Kyle Luebke has received the most attention. A gay conservative, Luebke was a prominent voice during the city’s passing of a nondiscrimination ordinance.

District 2

District 2 includes parts of uptown, west Charlotte and north Charlotte. Incumbent Democrat Malcolm Graham is seeking re-election and is facing Republican Mary Barnett.

District 3

District 3 includes Steele Creek, southwest Charlotte and some of South End. Incumbent Democrat Victoria Watlington is facing Republican James Bowers.

District 6
