West Charlotte HS celebrates ‘Lion Pride’ ahead of move to new campus

CHARLOTTE — The next chapter begins soon for West Charlotte High School with the debut of a brand new school building in the coming months.

Before they can welcome the new digs, decades worth of alumni and staff are saying goodbye to the old school building and its rich history.

“Legacy and history lives here,” said Robin Hudson, president of the school’s national alumni association.

On Saturday, the “Might Lions” are celebrating the 84-year-old building with ‘Lion Pride Day.’ Thousands of people are expected to descend on the school to reminisce in the hallways they once frequented.

West Charlotte High School is one of Charlotte’s oldest public schools and the “Mighty Lions” are celebrating their long history on Saturday.

“It’s going to be like a big family reunion,” said Hudson, who graduated from the school in 1992.

In the fall, students will move into the new school built right next to the existing one. The upgrades facility will include state-of-the-art technology and two large gyms to support the school’s sports teams.

“It’s exciting, it is bittersweet, because we’re looking forward to the new facility and all it offers our students, but this place has meant so much to so many for so long,” said school principal Donevin Hoskins.
