According to a news release from the Greeley Police Department, officers were called to an apartment complex early Wednesday. A caller told police that a 31-year-old man was “punching and kicking” a woman, KDVR-TV reported.

Police said the man then grabbed multiple knives and continued to assault the 44-year-old victim. The couple had been in a relationship, according to the release.

When officers arrived at the scene, the man allegedly fled in his vehicle, KDVR reported. When police observed the man driving back toward the scene, they attempted to conduct a traffic stop but the man eluded them, according to the television station.

The suspect exited his vehicle after turning into a dead end and fled on foot, the news release stated. The man climbed a fence and attempted to cross a highway, but was struck by a large commercial truck. The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

The 29-year-old driver of the truck remained at the scene and cooperated with authorities, KDVR reported.

The woman was taken to an area hospital with “several severe injuries” but is expected to survive, police said.

For now, police have ruled out drugs, alcohol or the speed of the truck as contributing factors to the accident. Police said the investigation was ongoing.
