CHARLOTTE — An off-duty officer was shot in the leg in Uptown Charlotte Sunday morning, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department said. The suspect is in custody.
The officer was responding to a domestic fight outside apartments at the 600 block of North Church Street shortly after 6:00 a.m.
According to CMPD, the suspect engaged in a physical fight with the officer, and the officer was shot in the leg. The suspect fled the scene.
“When you are dealing with people who are involved in a disturbance or heated argument, and an officer tries to de-escalate that, then it escalates up, things happen very quickly,” said Major Bret Balamucki.
Other officers arrived on the scene and caught the suspect, officials said.
Police have not released the suspect’s name.
The officer who was shot went to the hospital in a patrol car and had surgery. He is no longer in critical condition and is expected to be okay, CMPD says.
Tenants at the apartment complex told Channel 9’s Ken Lemon that they heard the shot ring out this morning.
“Unsettling, surprising,” tenant Donna Huntley said. “I was on my way to get my bike out of the garage and go on a ride, but seeing this police presence is unsettling.”
Now, the area is covered in crime scene tape and investigators.
No additional details have been made available.
