Man found dead behind east Charlotte fast food restaurant

CHARLOTTE — A homicide investigation is underway after a man was found dead in east Charlotte.

It happened around 7 a.m. Monday along North Sharon Amity Road at Central Avenue. At the scene, a Channel 9 crew could see what appeared to be the body behind a Captain D’s restaurant.

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department said they got a call to check on someone lying in the parking lot. When they arrived, they found Jose Antonio Mejia-Gaona, 25, who had been shot. Paramedics confirmed he died from his injuries.

CMPD did not share what led up to the shooting or say anything about the suspect.

The parking lot was roped off with crime scene tape as officers responded to the shooting, combing over the scene and looking for evidence. Officers focused their investigation near a charter school called Commonwealth High School. The body was found before school started for the day and before Captain D’s opened.

No further information was released.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
