CHARLOTTE — One person was hurt in a shooting in south Charlotte Monday afternoon, according to paramedics.

It happened around 3 p.m. at an apartment complex near Westpark Drive, which is off of Tyvola Road. MEDIC has confirmed that they took one person with life-threatening injuries to the hospital from the shooting scene.

A neighbor told Channel 9 that the shooting happened between a ride-booking driver and a passenger. She heard the driver got out of the car and shot someone. We are working to confirm those details with police.

“I saw a car approaching and several seconds later, just heard a pop and the car pulling off,” Michelle Benton said. “Once I realized what had happened, it was very scary. I just wanted to get out of the way.”

The victim told Channel that he was shot in the shoulder by his Lyft driver.

Lyft told Channel 9 that the driver is no longer working for them.

“The behavior described is reprehensible and has no place in the Lyft community or society. Our thoughts are with the rider, and we have reached out to offer support,” Lyft said in a statement. “We have permanently removed the driver from the Lyft platform, and stand ready to assist law enforcement with their investigation.”

Benton says she feels unsafe following the shooting.

“For this specific area, at our apartment complex, I’ve been here almost two years, and nothing like that has happened,” she said. “My concern mostly is about safety and surveillance. I think that they can do a better job as far as putting our surveillance cameras up, having patrol.”

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
