Two 19-year-olds dead after shooting inside car in Mount Holly

MOUNT HOLLY, N.C. — Two 19-year-olds were found shot to death in a vehicle Thursday night in Mount Holly, investigators said.

It happened around 8:15 p.m. along Piedmont Avenue near Dodge Street. Police said the gunfire went off while the two men were inside the car. Then, the vehicle rolled downhill.

GEMS pronounced the two people dead at the scene. On Friday, police identified them as Jayden Dae’Shun Munson, 19, and Jaylan Marray Jackson, 19. Both were from Concord.

On Friday, Channel 9′s Ken Lemon talked to neighbors who said they didn’t even think what they heard was gunshots.

Mount Holly Police Department detectives were back out along Piedmont Avenue on Friday morning. They were looking for clues they may have heard or seen overnight as well as checking with neighbors. They are also asking if anyone has security camera video.

The shooting stunned people in the neighborhood. One family was outside and most of them ran for cover.

“I actually went into the bathroom in my house because when I started thinking about it, I was like, ‘I don’t think that’s firecrackers,’” neighbor Denise Taylor said. “And I figured the bathroom in the house was the best place to go.”

Some neighbors said they saw two or three people running from the area after the shooting.

Channel 9 is working to learn more about why this happened and the search for those responsible. Police said the shooting was an isolated incident between people who knew each other. There is no threat to the community.

“We want to share our sincerest condolences with the families of the victims, and we stand ready to provide support during this difficult time,” Mount Holly Police Chief Brian Reagan said in a statement. “We are following up on every lead that we have on what appears to be an isolated incident between individuals who were familiar with each other. There is no immediate threat to the community. We are dedicating all available resources to bring those responsible for these crimes to justice. We are asking for anyone with information regarding this incident to contact the Mount Holly Police Department.”
