MONROE, N.C. — Four teens were taken into custody after a high-speed chase with Monroe police involving a stolen car.
In a Facebook post, the Monroe Police Department said officers tried to pull the car over on Concord Highway around noon Monday. The car didn’t stop, police said, and led them on a chase that continued to the Monroe Bypass.
The entire chase lasted nine minutes with the teens inside reaching speeds of 115 mph, police said.
Deputies with the Union County Sheriff’s Office used a device to deflate the car’s tires. The car came to a stop on Highway 74 at the Scott Clark Toyota dealership.
The four teenagers, who were 14 to 17 years old, were taken into custody.
The car, a Hyundai, was reported stolen from Charlotte, Monroe police said. The teens told officers they were making a TikTok video.
Police said the teens also had two handguns with them, one of which had been reported stolen, they said.
“Unfortunately in the middle of the day on a Monday, you would hope these kids would be in school -- but wasn’t the case,” said Monroe Lt. Morgan Malone.
“It’s sad, it’s very sad. It put a lot of people in a lot of danger. For these kids to be out -- and they referred to TikTok -- they were thinking this was some kind of TikTok fun. They thought it was a joke,” he added.
The juveniles will face criminal charges through the Department of Juvenile Justice.
