KINGS MOUNTAIN, N.C. — An ATM service technician is dead after shots were fired during a robbery Wednesday morning in Kings Mountain.
The Kings Mountain Police Department confirmed an armed robbery took place on E. Kings Street. Channel 9′s Ken Lemon spotted the scene near a pharmacy with an open ATM.
One person is dead, and witnesses told Lemon they heard at least two shots fired.
One witness was working nearby and tried to help the victim.
“I didn’t want him dying,” said Carson Bentley.
Bentley said he and a few others ran over to help, but when they got close, they realized there wasn’t much they could do but call for help. Bentley said the worker appeared to take his last breath as police arrived.
KMPD identified the victim as 29-year-old Richard Walter Henderson of Charlotte.
According to Lemon, a Loomis truck was parked near the ATM, and there was a large duffel bag on the ground.
Police in Kings Mountain said a suspect drove away from the scene after the shooting. A description hasn’t been given yet.
Lemon reported from the scene that it doesn’t appear that any money was taken during the incident.
The Kings Mountain Police Department said the victim was wearing a body camera, and investigators are looking through surveillance video in the search for the shooting suspect.
That includes a doorbell camera video that shows the Loomis van headed to the ATM. About 30 seconds later, the same doorbell camera sees a black SUV follow and circle the block a couple of times before speeding away. It left in the same direction police say the suspect went in a black SUV.
KMPD shared pictures of the SUV on social media.
“It may take some time, but we will locate you and bring you to justice,” said KMPD Chief Gerald Childress.
