BELMONT, N.C. — A little girl made history as the first baby to be born at Caromont’s new hospital in Belmont.
Sophia Grace arrived Thursday, Jan. 9, but her parents told Channel 9 her arrival wasn’t planned for the new hospital.
Carolina and Taylor Cleveland say they were scheduled to be induced at Caromont’s main hospital in Gastonia the day before. They say the hospital canceled the induction because they were overwhelmed with patients.
Thankfully, Caromont’s new hospital in Belmont opened that same day, and they were able to get in. Sophia was born the next day.
The family said they were the only ones there delivering, and the entire experience felt surreal.
“I mean it just top notch care. definitely had the vip experience for sure,” Taylor said. “The CEO of Caromont Health actually came by the room and personally congratulated us. Kind of highlights how important her birth is in the history of Caromont health. She’s going to go down as the first baby born at Caromont Health in Belmont.”
The family lives in York, South Carolina, and they said Caromont was the closest hospital that worked with their health insurance.
They said they’re grateful they have more options for medical care, and they believe it will help others in the area.
