Carowinds closes four long-time rides, set to make announcement on 2023 season

CHARLOTTE — Carowinds has announced that it has shut down four long-time rides and is set to make a major announcement next week about the future of its 2023 operating season.

A spokesperson for Carowinds said the Yo-Yo, Dodgem, Plants vs. Zombies Garden Warfare: 3Z Arena, and Southern Star closed on Aug. 1.

The Yo-Yo was made in 1981 and opened at Carowinds in 2008. The Dodgem premiered at Carowinds in 1979. The Plants vs. Zombies Garden Warfare: 3Z arena originally opened in 1993 and was re-themed in 2016, and the Southern Star was built in 1986.

The announcement was first made on the amusement park’s Facebook page, with a video announcing the “final call” for the rides.

A spokesperson for Carowinds confirmed that the Yo-Yo, Dodgem, and Plants vs. Zombies Garden Warfare: 3Z Arena, are permanently closed.

The future of the Southern Star was not immediately clear.

Carowinds said it encourages guests to follow Carowinds-owned social media accounts for teasers and to hear the major announcement on the 2023 season that it will announce on Aug. 11.

Carowinds did not release any further information.
