CATAWBA COUNTY, N.C. — A deputy with the Catawba County Sheriff’s Office has been injured in a crash while responding to a 911 call.
Surveillance video captured the incident as it occurred at the Goldmine General Store along Sherrills Ford Road.
Officials said while the deputy was responding to a call, he had to swerve to avoid hitting a pickup truck.
The deputy then lost control of his SUV and crashed into another car outside of the store.
They were taken to an area hospital for treatment before being released, according to the sheriff’s office.
Channel 9′s Dave Faherty spoke with a customer after they viewed the surveillance footage.
“He did all he could do to keep, in my opinion, from killing anybody. The other car pulled out in front of him. In my opinion, it’s not his fault, but it happens every day, so I’m just thankful no one was hurt,” customer Elmer Evans said.
Amanda Wright said her family has property across the street from where the wreck occurred. She said her mailbox has been knocked down more than a dozen times by wrecks along the busy road.
Wright said she believes deputies should use their blue lights if they’re traveling above the 45-mile-per-hour speed limit.
“If it were you need to go that fast, you need to at least have sirens and lights something to show everyone around you what’s happening. Because people are distracted and they don’t pay attention,” Wright explained.
The Catawba County Sheriff’s Office said the crash will be investigated by the North Carolina State Patrol. It is unclear if any charges will be filed.
Speed has been determined to be a contributing factor in the crash. However, it is unclear how fast the deputy was going, according to the sheriff’s office.
