Charlotte City Council votes to design pedestrian bridge into Uptown

CHARLOTTE — More than 2,000 days after Charlotte City Council voted to design a pedestrian bridge into Uptown.

Council members are expected to vote on Monday to spend more than $16 million on a new rail trail bridge that will cross over Interstate 277.

The project was unveiled in 2019 but faced years of delays because the city said planners had to create aesthetics, safety, and constructability that would be the least disruptive to traffic.

The bridge is expected to open in 2027.
