CMPD officer continues to help boys who were shot while sleeping

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Six months ago, Darryl Ervin, 11, and Jeremiah Ervin, 9, were shot while they slept in their west Charlotte home.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department Officer Caleb Costner, who responded to the scene in December, has been trying to help the children cope with what happened that night.

Costner recently brought the family new furniture through Beds for Kids.

The officer told the boys' mother to ask if she ever needed help, and she asked him to pick up a chair for her.

She’s a very humble person,” Costner said. “(She) won’t ask for things and I was like, she can use more than that.”

They bought the family the new chair, along with a table, rug, bed and more.

The boys’ mother was overwhelmed.

“I said, ‘Oh, my God, thank you.’ It was a big shock because all I asked for was just one chair,” Tamaker Thompson said.

In April, Costner helped the boys meet Charlotte Hornets player Michael Kidd-Gilchrist.

Thompson said they've been quieter since the shooting and by the time their interview with Channel 9 was over, the brothers were taking a nap on their new couch, leaning on each other like they lean on office Costner.

He wants them to know they're not alone.

Police are still trying to figure out who fired into their home and why it happened.
