GASTON COUNTY, N.C. — A Gaston County couple in their 60s was on their motorcycle when it collided with a car on Nov. 9 in Sharon, South Carolina, near York.
They survived but have an uphill road to recovery while medical bills skyrocket.
Troy Traversie has had more than $500,000 in skin grafts.
Transportation and healthcare may be out of network for Troy and Becky Traversie, family says.
They planned to ride into their retirement, but that plan is in jeopardy.
“They worked their whole life trying to get to a point to retire and now an accident could derail that,” said Stephen Traversie, their son.
His stepmother was thrown from the motorcycle in the crash and broke most of her bones below her hip.
The bike caught fire leaving his father with third-degree burns over 77% of his body.
“(We are) making sure that their health is good and that they are stable after the accident,” Stephen Traversie said.
Becky Traversie was airlifted from South Carolina to a Charlotte hospital.
“The financial burden is only going to continue to increase, and we don’t know the full totality because we are only one month into this,” Stephen Traversie said.
His father has already had 20 surgeries for skin grafts. They used his cells to grow new skin in a lab to protect him from infection.
His children know there’s still a long road ahead.
“We are trying to stay strong as a family and be there for them,” Stephen Traversie said.
