FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — The suspect accused of ramming a rented truck into a crowd of people on Bourbon Street in New Orleans on New Year’s Day has ties to North Carolina.
While digging into the suspect’s history, Channel 9 reporter Glenn Counts learned that he spent time in Fayetteville, North Carolina, at some point in his life.
It is unclear exactly how long the suspect, 42-year-old Shamsud-Din Jabbar, lived in the area, but records show he got a divorce at the Cumberland County Courthouse in 2013.
Photos of Jabbar also show him in an army uniform that reportedly comes from the 82nd Airborne Division in 2013.
Army records show he served on active duty from 2007 to 2015 before going into the reserves and eventually getting out in 2020.
According to court records in both Cumberland County and Texas, Jabbar got a divorce in 2013 after intimating those proceedings the year before.
Those records indicate that his ex-wife still lives in the Fayetteville area; however, Channel 9 was unable to locate her.
Channel 9 has reached out to the 82nd Airborne Division to confirm if Jabbar served with the organization. We have also reached out to the Fort Liberty military officials for confirmation but have not heard back.
