Woman killed in south Charlotte double shooting, police say

CHARLOTTE — A woman was killed and a man was hurt in a shooting Tuesday night at a south Charlotte home, Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said.

Now, a mystery is unfolding, and social media posts are raising questions about who pulled the trigger.

CMPD officers were called to Meadowridge Drive off Carmel Road at about 9:15 p.m. Tuesday. Police said a shot came from inside a home.

Investigators said they found 36-year-old Brandy Cox dead. A man was taken to the hospital with serious injuries, they said.

A suspect was identified on scene and taken into custody, police said.

The news of the deadly shooting is heartbreaking for neighbors like Tana Harwood.

“I looked out here and there,” she said. “I couldn’t figure out who would be shooting.”

Harwood has lived on Meadowridge Drive for more than 40 years. She said she’s never heard a shot in the neighborhood. Harwood lives next door to where the shooting happened.

“I know I’ve just been -- my heart -- very emotional today,” she told Channel 9′s Genevieve Curtis on Wednesday.

“It’s just shocking and hurtful, and I feel so much for the family,” she added.

Investigators have not said much, but through public records, Curtis confirmed a man who lives at the home where the shooting happened is the same man named in social media posts from two days ago. Those posts claim he sexually assaulted a girl in Virginia.

Curtis spoke to the man’s friends on Wednesday. They said the child’s relatives came from Virginia to confront him about the alleged assault.

Police records also confirm the shooting victims are from Virginia.

Cox’s friend, Summer Breeze, said her greatest loves were her daughter, stepdaughters, and husband.

“She would drop anything if she knew you needed you. She was there for you,” Breeze said.

Someone who said he is a friend of the man who lives at the home told Channel 9 the couple came to south Charlotte to confront that man about sexually assaulting a teenage relative.

“You knew she would protect you and she loves you,” Breeze said. “And she would stand up for anybody if they needed her.”

Breeze said she hopes to carry on her friend’s legacy by helping others.

“Her job was just to make people feel loved, and that they were wanted and that they could be saved,” Breeze said.
