Firefighter hurt during 3-alarm house fire in Ballantyne

CHARLOTTE — Charlotte Fire Department said one firefighter was treated for minor injuries from a 3-alarm fire in Ballantyne.

Around 1:30 a.m. Tuesday morning, Charlotte firefighters responded to a garage fire on Ledger Court.

Firefighters quickly called a second and third alarm when the fire spread to the house.

“I think there were four to five residents inside the home at the time. They were all able to escape unharmed,” said Battalion Chief John Lipcsak.

About 30 minutes later, there was a collapse. CFD said a firefighter issued a Mayday call and got trapped.

He was taken to an area hospital, and a full recovery is expected, according to CFD.

CFD said it took 80 firefighters to get the fire under control.

Resident Sarah Jones said she looked out her window early Tuesday morning and saw flames coming from her neighbor’s home.

“I came outside, and all I saw was smoke and a blaze. I opened up the back door, and it was like the fiery ash just blowing through the air,” Jones explained.

She said she was thankful everyone made it out of the house okay.

“The whole street was lined. It was, it was intense. It’s a total adrenaline rush, like just watching and figuring out what’s going on,” Jones elaborated. “I hope that the community can come together and donate and help this family recoup and recover.”

The firefighter is expected to make a full recovery.

Officials are now investigating the cause.
