First winter storm could impact Charlotte metro for first time in nearly 3 years

CHARLOTTE — A winter storm could impact the Charlotte metro for the first time in nearly three years.

Snow, ice, and rain are possible starting midday Friday in the southwest which will move northeast.

As the day goes on, we’ll see the snow become heavier before potentially transitioning over to freezing rain and ice.

This freezing rain will continue all night long Friday night into Saturday morning.

So, we’ll see a layer of snow followed by ice.

Travel could become extremely difficult if not impossible all over the Carolinas.

Power outages and downed tree branches are a possibility.

The exact timing, location, track, and amounts are still to be determined but we should have a better idea by Wednesday or Thursday.
