Growing up Chambers: What it means to walk in the footsteps of a civil rights giant

CHARLOTTE — Most people in Charlotte know Julius Chambers as the famed civil rights lawyer who argued several cases in front of the Supreme Court, including the one that led to integrating Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools.

However, to his family, he was known as “Dad” and “Papa.”

This week, The Charlotte Observer spoke to Chambers’ son and grandson about the weight of carrying on his legacy.

It’s part of a series of Black History Month stories that will be featured in this Sunday’s edition of The Charlotte Observer.

They’re also examining how Black history is being taught in our local schools.
