CHARLOTTE — Gunfire struck school bus No. 1748 from Albemarle Road Middle School on Monday afternoon in east Charlotte, school district officials said. It happened in the area of East. W.T. Boulevard where it turns into North Idlewild Road.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools officials said the shooting stemmed from a dispute outside the bus.
Part of a window was shut out with two bullet holes next to it.
There were about 30 students onboard and two of them were treated for minor injuries after being hit by glass.
No one was shot, and the shooter was arrested.
Through a student’s eyes
One student who was cut by the glass says what should’ve been a normal ride home turned into chaos.
“I was really scared,” said Ja’Mya Dawkins. “I heard like three shots and me and her ducked, and I felt something wet on my eyebrow, and it started dripping down my face.”
Dawkins showed Channel 9′s Almiya White where she was sitting on bus 1748. It was just feet away from where bullets struck two windows.
“You see the glass that’s broken like real bad, I was like one seat above it,” Dawkins said. “I had closed my eyes because glass had got in my eyes ... we were just praying and crying.”
CMS says the gunfire started as a “dispute” outside the bus.
CMPD says the CMS bus and an Infiniti were shot into.
Dawkins told White she’s just glad the shooting wasn’t deadly.
“We just started praying and thanking God that we’re OK and still conscious,” Dawkins said.
