‘I had no choice’: Woman says movers quoted her one price, charged her double

CHARLOTTE — Megan Finn decided to move from Chicago to Charlotte, went online, and found a mover.

Finn launched her business, a clothing swap platform for children’s clothes, but they’ve outgrown it in the last year. She says she hired Map Moving and Storage to move to the Queen City.

“I went with them thinking that it was going to save us some money,” she said.

Finn says the business FaceTimed with her to see her belongings.

“That estimate was about $12,000,” she said.

She told Action 9 she packed everything herself and gave the business a total box count.

“So then, on the phone that day, they’re like OK, well, you’ve got a lot more boxes than we estimated and so now it’s going to be $18,000,” she said.

Finn says she added a few boxes after that, around 10 or so.

“The foreman does a walk-through through the house to look at everything, comes back with a new estimate of $24,000,” Finn said.

“I had no choice. I mean, they, we had to be out of our house next day,” she said. “I’m furious. This is just money I don’t have to spend right now.”

Problems with movers upcharging

It’s one of the complaints Action 9 hears most when it comes to movers: companies allegedly upcharging consumers.

Federal transportation officials have been pretty vocal about the issue, more specifically against what’s called “weight bumping.” That’s when movers purposely estimate the weight or volume of your belongings wrong. They’ve criticized movers for “deliberately providing a ‘low-ball’ estimate to lure” you. The feds have even taken legal action against some companies recently.

Action 9 investigator Jason Stoogenke reached out to the company multiple times and ways over the last few weeks, but didn’t hear back in time for this report. As of Friday, the BBB gave the company an “F” rating.

No matter who you hire:

  • Read the fine print.
  • If you end up talking to a broker, see who’s really moving you.
  • Don’t let anyone pressure you.
