‘It’s unreal’: Residents across the Queen City impacted by record highs during heat wave

CHARLOTTE — Temperatures in Charlotte have gotten so high that MEDIC was called to rescue a worker from a tree in south Charlotte because of the heat.

The incident happened around 12:30 p.m. on Berea Court off Camel Road. Crews were called to help a tree trimmer having a heat emergency.

Pictures of the rescue were sent to Channel 9, showing the large group effort it took to help him—both MEDIC and the Charlotte Fire Department were on the scene. Officials say the worker is expected to be okay.

Channel 9′s Glenn Counts went around the city and spoke with several people who were struggling to keep cool.

Judy Pickering lives in the neighborhood and watched part of the rescue unfold. She spent some of the day working in her yard and told Channel 9 that she understands how quickly the heat can get to you.

“So it does creep up on you; you don’t feel it until it’s almost too late,” Pickering said.

At Camp North End, cooks are working in triple-digit temperatures in the outdoor kitchens. Xavier Hill just started at Bleu Barn and is already looking forward to the cooler weather expected to come through the city next week.

“It’s unreal; it’s 105 in here; it feels like it’s about 200 degrees; I got my three stoves; I got a fryer; and it’s excruciating,” Hill told Counts. “I’m actually looking forward to next week to get a little cold weather in here.”

Splash pads throughout the city seem to be working overtime as people gather to beat the heat. People like Isaac Waibeo say they’ve used them to cool down more than once this week.

“This is my second day in a row coming to the splash pad with my little stepson, so it’s a hot day,” Waibeo said.
