CALDWELL COUNTY, N.C. — On Saturday, Channel 9’s Dave Faherty reported a large police presence along Grace Chapel Road near Highway 321.
Sources told Faherty an officer-involved shooting involving the NC Highway Patrol shut down the road until 9 p.m. State troopers were not hurt in the incident.
Troopers responded to the scene at 4:20 p.m. Saturday as a reported collision.
Before arriving, troopers said they were informed one of the parties was armed with a handgun.
Officials said the suspect displayed the handgun and did not comply with troopers’ commands. Senior Trooper William Miller then fired his duty-issued weapon and struck the suspect.
The suspect was secured and transported to a hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased. Officials have identified the suspect as 48-year-old Scott Patrick Seagle.
Officials reported that no troopers were injured in the incident. Miller will be placed on administrative leave while the State Bureau of Investigation looks into the incident, officials said.
Eyewitnesses said the road had been shut down for more than two hours after hearing shots ring out.
The Grace Chapel Hill Volunteer Fire Department posted the following update on Facebook:
