CHARLOTTE — A 26-year-old man has died after police say he was speeding through an apartment complex in east Charlotte early Wednesday morning.
Just before 5:30 a.m., officers with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department responded to reports of an overturned vehicle at Valleyview Apartments on Hickory Valley Court.
At the scene, they found an unresponsive man lying near the vehicle with extensive injuries. A Toyota Sequoia was also found tipped over on its driver’s side, along with a tipped-over metal garbage dumpster, according to police.
Police said two women were then located near the vehicle. Both women were taken to Novant Health Presbyterian with non-life-threatening injuries.
The man, later identified as Daniel Rashawn Rogers, was pronounced deceased at the scene, according to police.
Police said a preliminary investigation indicates that Rogers and the two women were traveling through the Valleyview Apartments parking lot towards Hickory Valley Court when he lost control of the vehicle due to speeding and impairment.
Rogers was not able to regain control before the front right corner of the Sequoia struck a wooden fence and ultimately the metal garbage dumpster. He was then ejected from the vehicle, along with one of the women, according to police.
Police Rogers and the woman who was ejected were not wearing seatbelts at the time of the incident.
A witness told Channel 9 at the scene that he saw someone doing donuts in the area before the crash.
“I saw this identical vehicle streaking around in circles, multiple times, heavily. Man, I was like scared,” the witnesses said.
Police said the investigation into this incident is active and ongoing. Anyone with information regarding this crash is asked to contact Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
