Urgent search continues for man missing from fishing trip in Caldwell County

CALDWELL COUNTY, N.C. — People in Caldwell County are continuing the search for a man who was reported missing on Thursday after he was last seen going on a fishing trip.

Michael Hallford, 44, went fishing on federal land near Brown Mountain Beach Road and hasn’t been seen since. His car was found by a nearby creek.

Officials with Caldwell County Emergency Services said Wilson Creek can be dangerous sometimes because it rises quickly during heavy rains near Grandfather Mountain. On Thursday, that is what happened when it rained.

Crews have been using drones and searching on land and in the water.

Channel 9′s Dave Faherty spoke with family members and friends desperate for answers in the case. They said that Wilson Creek was one of his favorite spots to fish.

“We like to come here, go fishing, get away from everyone sometimes,” said Hallford’s friend, Randy Blumich, who was helping in the search. “Enjoy the freedom of being out here alone.”

Caldwell County Emergency Services flew a drone over much of the creek Monday afternoon and will have more resources available Tuesday.

No further information was released.
