CHARLOTTE — A south Charlotte man said he was shot at early Monday morning after interrupting a home break-in along Legacy Circle off Providence Road and police are searching for whoever is responsible.
The victim said he turned into his neighborhood at the Country Club Estates, and when he got onto his street, he saw something suspicious.
The man, who didn’t want to be identified, said he was getting home from a night shift when he witnessed a burglary at his neighbor’s house.
“I noticed these people running into my neighbor’s house into the garage with hoodies on,” said the man who didn’t want to be identified. “They got spooked, ran back to their getaway car, and hit the gas.”
The man followed the suspects and called 911. They eventually turned out of the neighborhood onto Providence Road.
“As soon as we get on Providence Road, the person in the right rear passenger seat opens the window, leans out the window, and opens fire with a pistol,” the man said. “As soon as I saw muzzle flashes, I ducked beneath the steering wheel, slammed on the brakes, and followed from a distance.”
They got away.
The man wasn’t hurt but his car was left with a busted front bumper and other damage after two rounds hit it.
He said he’s just thankful he drove up to the initial crime when he did, knowing a family with young kids were inside.
“I’m a protective person,” he said. “I guess people doing things wrong bothers me. I believe I was just put there at the right time, right place.”
The break-in and the shooting are active investigation.
Police do not advise anyone to go after suspected criminals. Instead, they say to call 911 and let the police respond.
