Monroe police identify gunman who allegedly shot officer after pursuit

MONROE, N.C. — Monroe police shot and killed an 18-year-old suspect accused of shooting a female officer early Saturday morning during a chase and manhunt.

At about 1:45 a.m., officers tried to pull over Joshua Hayden Sikes, 18, on Old Charlotte Highway at Rocky River Road, but he kept going prompting a pursuit.

Officers deployed stop sticks at Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Goldmine Rock, stopping the suspects vehicle.

He got out an opened fire on the Monroe police officer who was shot multiple times. Sikes then ran into the woods, police said.

At a Saturday morning news conference, Lt. Morgan Malone showed a photo of the officer’s cruiser, which was riddled with bullet holes.

The officer who was shot was taken to Atrium Health Main and she is stable, Monroe Police said.

There was a manhunt for the suspect after he ran into the woods.

At about 3:50 a.m., officers found Sikes who had a rifle. He shot at officers a second time. They returned fire killing Sikes.

The rifle was located by the suspect.

Area roads were closed during the manhunt and investigation.

There is no threat to the public.

This is an ongoing investigation, which includes the State Bureau of Investigation.
