MATTHEWS, N.C. — The Town of Matthews has declined the North Carolina Department of Transportation’s proposed project to widen East John Street.
The Board of Commissioners recently voted to request the removal of the project that was proposed.
“This decision follows years of public feedback opposing the four-lane plan and studies showing a three-lane design would better fit the town’s vision,” a statement from the town reads. “Matthews has long advocated for a more context-sensitive solution, prioritizing pedestrian safety and maintaining the historic downtown charm.”
The NCDOT recently told the town that the four-lane plan remains the only option for the funds, which prompted the board’s action.
Matthews still plans to pursue a federal RAISE grant, with the help pf NCDOT, to fund a redesigned three-lane roadway with improved sidewalks, multi-use paths, medians and turn lanes, the release said.
