Multiple vehicle break-ins reported at Ballantyne apartments

CHARLOTTE — Eleven vehicles were broken into Wednesday morning at the Legacy 521 apartment complex off Lancaster Highway in Ballantyne, according to reports from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.

The thieves got away with medical equipment, a tablet, credit cards, and purses.

The crimes happened between midnight and 4 a.m. Wednesday.

Tenant Matheus Silva said he was surprised to wake up to police activity.

“It was a cop saying someone had gotten into my car and she went to make sure nothing was stolen,” Silva said.

He said this isn’t the first time it has happened.

“The same thing happened a year ago give or take,” Silva said. “I know several wallets and other belongings were taken.”

Tenants said they are taking precautions.

“Definitely, not leaving anything in the car,” said resident Arantxa Leon. “Maybe trying to find a camera we can put in the card to record in case somebody does break in. We pray that that doesn’t happen.”

Silva said he would watch out for unusual activity.

“In our case, we try to park the car close to where we live so we can see cameras,” he said.

A spokesperson for Legacy 521 sent Channel 9 the following statement:

“The safety of our residents is always our top priority, and we are actively assisting law enforcement to determine what occurred during the vehicle intrusions at several area businesses. As with any ongoing investigation, we are unable to comment further on the situation. We have been and will continue keeping our valued residents informed of measures being taken.”

The complex also sent an email to a tenant which read that the complex has a security company that does random patrols throughout the night.
