CHARLOTTE — Charlotte city government administrators have disclosed a new agreement with developers Lincoln Property Co. and Republic Land Development to revamp years-old plans for Gateway Station.
The extension comes as city government prepares to hand off its transit system to the Metropolitan Public Transportation Authority on Jan. 1. The MPTA formed last year after voters approved a 1-cent sales tax increase to pay for $19 billion of a 30-year, $25.3 billion roads and transit expansion plan. As part of that referendum, state law created the MPTA to absorb Charlotte Area Transit System.
During Charlotte City Council’s monthly transportation committee meeting on Nov. 2, Deputy City Manager Alyson Craig updated members on next steps and plans to collaborate with the MPTA and county government on Gateway Station, a 20-acre site at the edge of Third and Fourth wards that has been targeted since 2006 for a mixed-use real estate project and companion multimodal transit hub. The site is near the intersection of West Trade and South Graham streets, near the Charlotte Knights stadium.
