‘It’s sad’: Parents voice opposition after Cabarrus County’s decision to close school

CONCORD, N.C. — There was not an empty seat Monday night inside the Cabarrus County School Board chambers when passionate parents, students, and alumni voiced their opposition to plans to close Beverly Hills Elementary School.

It’s part of the school board’s realignment plan.

CCS wants to demolish Beverly Hills Elementary and build a larger school on Coltrane-Webb Elementary School’s property, which will open in 2026.

“They have to learn a whole new facility,” parent Andrea Burleson said Monday night. “Learn a whole new staff.”

The district wants to build a pre-K and community park on Beverly Hills Elementary’s current site.

One parent told Channel 9′s Almiya White he bought his home within the boundary to send his son to Beverly Hills Elementary.

“If that school disappears, he has to go somewhere else and it’s sad,” said Ryan Mueller.

This comes as district leaders are discussing major boundary changes to help with it’s growing student population.

“We don’t want our children removed from a Title 1 school that’s thriving and they’re getting the education that they need,” said Summer Mueller.

The school board will vote on a final option on Feb. 12, and new district lines and school assignments will be in place for the next 2024-2025 school year.

The board is expected to vote on the closure on Feb. 5 and decide on the district’s realignment on Feb. 12.
