Suspect charged with attempted murder after shooting SBI agent

REIDSVILLE, N.C. — A North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation special agent was shot and wounded Saturday while searching for a suspect in Rockingham County, officials said.

Rockingham County sheriff’s deputies responded to a shots-fired call on Walker Street in Reidsville earlier Saturday.

When deputies arrived, the suspect, identified as Marvin D. White, 38, began shooting at deputies and ran away on foot.

The SBI was called in to help locate White and process the crime scene. Agents and deputies identified an area where White might be hiding.

An SBI special agent found White and ordered him to drop his weapon, but officials said White instead fired at the agent and struck him in the leg. The agent returned fire.

SBI Director Chip Hawley said Saturday night the agent will undergo surgery to repair damage to his leg from the shooting. The agent is a 10-year veteran of the SBI and remains hospitalized in stable condition.

White has been charged with one count each of attempted first-degree murder, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury, and assault with a firearm on a law enforcement officer.
