SC governor declares state of emergency

COLUMBIA, S.C. — South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster declared a state of emergency on Friday as winter weather approaches.

“Our state’s emergency teams are fully prepared, and this State of Emergency will provide them additional support to respond to the winter weather moving across our state,” said Governor Henry McMaster. “Forecasts predict significant snow, sleet, and ice, with conditions intensifying earlier than anticipated, creating dangerous road conditions today and into tomorrow. I urge all South Carolinians to avoid travel unless absolutely necessary, take appropriate safety measures, and stay informed by following local weather updates.”

“The Governor’s Executive Order further ensures state agencies can continue to efficiently coordinate any necessary resources,” said South Carolina Emergency Management Division Director Kim Stenson. “We’ve faced snow and ice storms in the past, and we are fully prepared to respond to any requests for assistance from our local emergency managers.”

SCDOT prepares for possible winter weather

On Wednesday, the South Carolina Department of Transportation announced that it has mobilized crews across the state ahead of possible winter weather.

“SCDOT crews are preparing equipment and pre-treating roads across the state while we continue to monitor the forecast. We want our community members to know that SCDOT stands ready to respond to any winter weather to keep South Carolinians moving,” said Secretary of Transportation Justin Powell.

SCDOT said crews are pretreating the roads across the state in areas that could see winter weather impacts.

Drivers are asked to slow down and give crews space to work.

As weather conditions deteriorate, residents are encouraged to stay off the roads.
