Cars shot up near First Ward Park; investigation underway, CMPD says

CHARLOTTE — Officers say cars riddled with bullet holes at two separate crime scenes in Uptown Charlotte Tuesday night are connected.

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department responded around 9 p.m. Tuesday to a shooting in the area of First Ward Park in Uptown Charlotte. It was at Seventh Street near North Caldwell Street.

Police shut down the intersection for hours. One car that looked abandoned was on the grass at the park and another one -- a black sedan -- also looked to be involved. It had bullet holes in it.

CMPD said witnesses told them they heard gunshots shortly after a crash. Then, they saw someone get out of his car and run from the scene.

Investigators now say whatever happened there is tied to an earlier shooting scene along Siegle Avenue. That’s where police found two vehicles with multiple bullet holes, one of which was apparently involved in a crash. The second, a white Range Rover, had 14 bullet holes in the windshield. The back window was completely busted with the glass hanging from it.

Two guns were recovered during CMPD’s investigation. However, no injuries have been reported, according to police.

A neighbor told Chanel 9′s Almiya White he heard gunshots.

“We heard the loud ‘pop, pop, pops’ and a loud bang,” Max Greenwood said.

Greenwood said he was at home winding down for the night when he heard gunfire along Harrill Street, which runs parallel to Siegle Avenue.

“I was in the back of the house so it really caught us off guard,” he said.

Greenwood saaid the violence is concerning.

“I have a kid and we’ve lived here for about a year and it is definitely concerning,” he said. “But hopefully, they caught the guy are working on it.”

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
