Woman injured by shooting into home, Burke County deputies say

BURKE COUNTY, N.C. — A woman was hurt when someone shot into her home over the weekend, deputies said.

It happened around 3:30 a.m. Sunday along Austin Avenue in Burke County, south of Morganton. Sheriff’s deputies said someone shot five times into the mobile home, with one of the shots going through the woman’s bedroom and hitting her in her side.

The woman was flown to the hospital, investigators said.

So far, deputies haven’t shared any suspect information.

More than half a dozen deputies returned to the home Monday morning to investigate with metal detectors.

Austin Avenue is a dead end road with just a couple of houses on it. Several families live in the area.

Channel 9′s Dave Faherty asked if it was possibly a drive-by shooting, and deputies said they are trying to determine that. Neighbors described hearing a loud car engine moments after being woken to the sound of gunfire.

Deputies are also checking the neighborhood for any possible surveillance video.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
