SOUTH CAROLINA — In South Carolina, a state education committee is recommending four books be removed from school libraries.
The books in question are “The Perks of Being a Wallflower”, “All Boys Aren’t Blue”, “Flamer”, and “Push by Sapphire”.
WCIV in Charleston reports the committee chair said the vote to remove the books was unanimous because they “clearly violated the law.”
The chair also said the books have sexually explicit content.
These are just recommendations. The full State Board of Education will vote in early February on whether to remove them.
If the board agrees, the removal process depends on each school district.
You may remember in October, Channel 9 told you the York County Library stopped buying new books for its teen and children’s sections. Officials cited a new state law that ties library funding to what types of books can be in those sections.
We’ve reached out to the library to see if they have purchased any books since and we’re waiting to hear back.
