CLOVER, S.C. — SWAT, York County Sheriff’s Office Deputies, and negotiators responded to a home in Clover with a grandmother barricading herself inside.

Officials said they responded to the home on Windsong Forest Road on Monday afternoon after the 70-year-old woman opened fire on her family members.

The grandmother, Cathy Carpenter, was trying to evict her grandson, 18-year-old Ashton Carpenter. But the man’s grandfather did not want him out of the house.

The family went to court Monday morning, where the judge ruled that Ashton Carpenter could stay in the house.

When Ashton Carpenter returned with his family, Cathy Carpenter opened fire, standing on the other side of the door.

“She came outside and told them they weren’t going to come in, and then that person, the female suspect, fired about five rounds at the people — her family members — outside,” said Trent Faris with YCSO.

Ashton Carpenter said he feared for his life, and the family began running. Fortunately, no one was hurt.

“We waited in the driveway to make sure they got in okay, and she came out and started shooting. I fell on the floorboard,” said Janet Hensley, Ashton Carpenter’s aunt.

Carpenter then barricaded herself inside the home. SWAT, YCSO Deputies and negotiators responded to the scene.

The standoff lasted about three hours and ended when SWAT broke down the door and took Cathy Carpenter into custody.

“I thought she would have never do nothing like that to me, you know,” Ashton Carpenter said.

Family members said that Cathy Carpenter had recently attempted to hit them with a frying pan. She had recently been arrested.

They said they called the Department of Social Services to perform a mental evaluation on Cathy Carpenter, but they would not take the case.
