Icy conditions remain across the Carolinas

CHARLOTTE — Roads across the Carolinas iced over Friday night, creating slick conditions.

Channel 9′s Joe Bruno spotted a massive downed tree laying across 9th Street in Uptown across from the SkyHouse Luxury Apartments early Saturday morning.

Thankfully, a Charlotte Firehouse was nearby on North Church Street. There were already barriers up around the tree and it appeared as though it wouldn’t significantly impact traffic in Uptown.

In Matthews, a water main break created treacherous travel conditions Saturday morning, police said.

Just after 5 a.m., the Matthews Police Department confirmed there had been a water main break at E. John Street and Trade Street. Police encouraged drivers to use alternate routes.

Channel 9′s Dave Faherty was in Catawba County early Saturday where he said Highway 127 was still very slick from overnight snow, sleet, and freezing rain.

The last time Charlotte saw measurable snow, at least one-tenth of an inch, was in 2022. Snow, along with ice and the power grid, were the major concerns for Duke Energy this week.

Prior to any major weather event, officials said they want to make sure residents are as prepared as possible.

“Duke Energy always encourages our customers to have a plan. You know, just have a plan in case you were to lose power because you know Mother Nature, we don’t ever know what that’s going to bring us,” said Duke Energy Spokesperson Logan Stewart. “Just having some supplies on hand, bottled water, or things like that.”

We’re also monitoring impacts at Charlotte Douglas International Airport. Channel 9′s Hunter Sáenz was at the airport Saturday morning where things seemed to be much calmer than they were just 24 hours ago.

According to FlightAware, more than 160 flights were delayed and more than 700 were canceled on Friday. Channel 9′s Glenn Counts spoke with stranded passengers who had to spend their night in the airport or at a hotel.

“It’s nothing like a bed, but it feels quite nice; to be honest, we’re having a good time right now,” said passenger Jack Harris.

“You have got to find the positives out of the negatives in life, so it has been a tough day. I’m just glad I’m still alive and I’m able to go about my day,” said passenger Timi Adams.
