Thieves smash into Huntersville shop on Christmas, steal a single PlayStation

HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. — While some kids were opening their presents to get their first video game systems, one thief smashed into a store to get a PlayStation on Christmas.

Channel 9′s Almiya White went to Video Game World in Huntersville and learned that the PlayStation was the only thing the thief was after.

Standing on the back side of the store, you can see where the suspect smashed the windowpane of the door to get inside. Store manager Stephen Cobb said it felt like a movie scene.

“It sounded like something from Home Alone,” Cobb told White. “Came right through the back door and just grabbed a system and ran.”

Cobb says in the late hours of Christmas Eve into Christmas morning, his store became the victim of a smash and grab.

“They shattered the glass in our back door here. Shattered one of the panes, reached in, unlocked the door,” Cobb said. “They came in, they shattered our console case.”

Inside of the case was one sought-after system.

“It’s the holiday season and to steal the hot ticket item for sure, that’s the one thing that everybody’s looking for, the PS5,” Cobb said.

Cobb said surveillance footage caught the alleged suspect in action. He wasn’t able to share that footage with us, but he walked us through what was seen.

“Looked like a male, but you couldn’t see much else beside that, it was dark. [He] had a mask on and the hood up,” Cobb said. “It was intimidating, seeing how quick that somebody was able to get in, grab what they wanted and get out.”

As Cobb picks up the pieces of broken shattered glass, he says the next step will be to beef up the store’s security.

“We got some more cameras coming, we’re going to put them directly on the front here,” Cobb said. “We’re going to probably put an all-wood door there, nothing that they can punch out or anything like that.”

Huntersville police told Channel 9 they’re investigating the burglary. No suspects have been identified yet.
