DURHAM, N.C. — A truck resembling a U.S. Customs and Border Patrol vehicle caused panic in Durham after it was parked at Compare Foods last week, featuring a logo with an obscene message.
Durham Police have stated that no crime was committed, although they described the incident as being in poor taste. The truck’s logo, which from a distance appeared similar to that of ICE, was found to contain an obscene message upon closer inspection.
Ivan Almonte, a leader of the nonprofit, Respueta Rápida de Durham, which defends immigrants’ rights, believes the incident was intentional.
“That person knows where to go - that person knew where to find this specific community,” Almonte said, suggesting the timing was deliberate.
Durham Police are in contact with other local law enforcement agencies to ensure they are aware of the incident.
The incident has heightened fear in the Durham community, particularly among vulnerable groups. While no charges have been filed, the situation remains a topic of concern for local residents and activists.
Statement from Durham police: “Based on the facts of this case, no crime has been committed. While it is certainly in poor taste, the vehicle’s decals do not reference ICE and this case does not meet the elements needed to criminally charge the driver with impersonating a law enforcement officer.”
